Catch-up: ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance starting in December
Catch-up story: OpenAI posted this help article by Oct. 31, per press coverage, and our earlier editions missed it. The page itself shows only a relative update time.
OpenAI says that starting in December, the usage allowance on Plus, Pro and Business plans will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex, as it brings the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience. Usage will be measured in tokens, and how fast you use it depends on the model and the task, with advanced models and complex tasks using more. Instant chat will not draw from the allowance. Combined remaining usage and reset times will show in Settings → Usage. At the limit, you can wait for a reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.
OpenAI hasn't given an exact December date or allowance sizes. The article doesn't mention Free, Go, Enterprise or Edu plans, say how the current five-hour and weekly Codex windows or banked resets carry over, or mention API credits. OpenAI says it expects most users won't need to wait for resets more often than they do now.
Why it matters: Heavy ChatGPT reasoning or Work sessions will cut into the same budget your team uses for Codex coding, so plan seats and credit budgets around combined use.
Codex sends the second of two banked usage resets
OpenAI's Codex lead Tibo Sottiaux posted "Day 28/ Banked 2/2" at 5:27 PM CT on Sunday, Nov. 1. That means the second banked reset has gone out. The first went out Saturday evening, and this completes the pair he announced on Oct. 31. He didn't say which plans get it or when it expires.
A banked reset doesn't refresh your usage until you redeem it. According to OpenAI's help article, you redeem it from Usage settings on desktop or web, or with /usage in the CLI. It can't be redeemed on mobile, and the allowance it applies to must be below 80% remaining. Accounts that got both resets can redeem them separately.
Why it matters: Teams that received both resets have two refreshes they can use whenever they choose. Saving them for heavy sessions gets more out of them, provided neither expires unused.

What to do
- Plan for one shared ChatGPT and Codex budget in December. Plus, Pro and Business admins whose teams use both should watch Settings → Usage once the change lands and decide whether to upgrade seats or buy credits. Understanding ChatGPT and Codex usage limits
- Check Codex usage settings for banked resets. If you use Codex, look for both banked resets and their expiry dates, then redeem each one from desktop, web or the CLI's /usage command when your allowance runs low. How resets work in Codex
